Indonesian fashion is full of flowing fabrics, vibrant patterns, and bright colors. More on the traditional side in the world of fashion, the country is getting a futuristic, surreal update by fashion designer and entrepreneur, Tex Saverio. While you may not recognize his name yet, you undoubtedly have seen the artist’s work.
Described as the Alexander McQueen of Southeast Asia, Saverio sets high standards with his extravagant, floor-length gown designs and custom costuming. Saverio’s designs have graced the bodies of fashion icons Kim Kardashian as well as Asian pop star, Ayumi Yamasaki. And Lady Gaga, of course, most notably wearing the designer on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar — shot by Terry Richardson and styled by Nicola Formichetti.
Saverio’s avant-garde gowns are stealing the spotlight all over the fashion world as he creates with one simple motivation in mind: Women. “I want to empower, and make them look beautiful, that is the most important thing in the fashion industry,” he says.
Pursuing growth in his artistry and career, Saverio decided it was time to translate his designs into more wearable pieces and co-founded a ready-to-wear fashion company, Saverio & Liu in 2012, with partner Warren Liu. They plan to turn Saverio & Liu into Southeast Asia’s first global fashion house, complete with clothing, jewelry, and home product lines. In short, they plan to push Indonesia—and the rest of Southeast Asia—into the forefront of the mainstream fashion world.
